Relaxed Guided Walks around the woods, downs and ancient sites of Wiltshire
Martinsell, at 948 ft asl, is one of the highest points in Wiltshire - the highest point is just 20 ft higher, at the summit behind Milk Hill, 4 miles to the west of Martinsell. There are magnificent views of the Pewsey Vale from Martinsell to Huish Hill along the Tan Hill Way.
From Oare Hill on a clear day, the spire of Salisbury Cathedral is said to be visible. The spire is the tallest in Britain (404 ft); the top of the spire is at 570 ft asl, with the intermediate ground being no higher than 500 ft, so this may well be true. We have two walks to include Martinsell; the first covers just Martinsell Hill, the second covers Martinsell and a part of the Tan Hill Way to Huish Hill and then to West Woods.

MH2 - Marlborough - Martinsell - Tan Hill Way - Shaw - West Woods
A more energetic walk than the previous one - the initial route to Martinsell is as described in MH1, but we continue further along The Tan Hill Way and The White Horse Trail to the site of the medieval village of Shaw, and into West Woods, passing through the Woods and back across the southern downs into Marlborough.

MH1 - Marlborough - Clench Common - Martinsell Hill
Our walk starts in Marlborough with one of our traditional ‘exits’ towards Savernake Forest, but taking out across the fields to Clench Common instead. A short side-road walk takes us along to the start of Tan Hill Way and Martinsell. Don’t be put off by the fact that we are climbing to a height of 950 ft from 430 ft at Marlborough, this is done in several stages. We then continue west along Tan Hill Way to Oare Hill for more views over The Vale of Pewsey, before retracing our steps slightly and returning to Clench. From Clench we pass West Woods for a pretty stroll back into Marlborough.
